The vast amount of different water sources in the Campbell River area provides incomparable birding opportunities. Lakes, ocean, marshes and rivers sustain an incredible diversity of bird species, including Bald Eagles, Canada Geese and Trumpeter Swans. The surrounding forests are ideal habitats for birds such as different songbirds and owls that live in the area throughout the year, so birding anytime is a superb time.

A journey by boat to Mitlenatch Island Provincial Park, just 8 miles northeast of Miracle Beach Provincial Park, you will discover a birding and wildflower paradise. Mitlenatch is home to the largest seabird colony on the Strait of Georgia, primarily about 6000 glaucous-winged gulls.

The Campbell River estuary is very important to the biological and cultural history of the river. Over the years, recreational activity has expanded both in the estuary and along the length of the river as nature activities and study, including birding, have become popular in the area. There has been considerable community co-operation focused on the management of the Campbell River and its estuary.
